Last week saw our Orchid House Tea Room at Bedwellty House & Park triumph at the first ever Welsh Café Awards in Cardiff, winning the award for Best Café Food and also coming runner up for the Best Visitors Café award.

Over 200 café professionals from all over Wales gathered together at The Exchange Hotel to recognise and celebrate the very best in the coffee industry.

The gala awards night was hosted by radio persona, Polly James, and provided a platform to thank those in the café industry that always have fresh and delicious hot beverages, savouries and pastries ready to be served to their customers.

Irfan Younis, CEO of Creative Oceanic, the company behind the awards said: “Although in our first year, we are honoured by the fantastic response we have had from the public who was so keen to vote for their favourite cafés.

“The cafe industry has grown massively over the past years and we aimed to seek out, reward and thank those who have managed to make a real difference by introducing innovation in this industry.

“The awards also aimed to acknowledge everything that is coffee related and showcase that Welsh people are big coffee lovers. It was lovely to be part of this celebration and we would like to congratulate all finalists and winners for their achievements!”

Phill Sykes, Commercial Director at Aneurin Leisure, the charitable Trust that manages Bedwellty House said of their experience; "We are thrilled to have won the award for Best Cafe Food and to be a runner up for the Best Visitors Cafe award at the Welsh Cafe Awards. We have been overwhelmed by the response from our customers and the local community, and would like to take the opportunity to thank them all for their amazing support.

We take great pride in the quality of our food and afternoon teas, always striving to offer the best quality that we can, so to achieve recognition at such a prestigious event filled with top quality businesses from all over Wales, is a dream come true."

Green-Flag-logo

Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space – and we’re thrilled to announce that for the fourth consecutive year, Parc Bryn Bach in Tredegar is one of them!

This year 221 parks and green spaces have met the high standards needed to receive the coveted Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award. They include a diverse range of sites, from urban parks and housing estates, to university campuses and farms.

Parc Bryn Bach in Tredegar is set within 340 acres of idyllic grass and woodland with a stunning 36 acre lake at its heart, making it the perfect setting for a range of activities for visitors of all ages and abilities. The diverse park features a variety of picturesque walking and cycling trails, a golf course (including foot golf) and driving range, BMX track, caravan and campsite and children’s play area. The on-site Lake View Café provides a range of meals and refreshments and for a 6 week trial period throughout the summer, will also be dog friendly, allowing visitors to bring their four legged friends inside to enjoy the facilities and even get a dog friendly ice-cream.

Parc Bryn Bach is also a hub for a range of exciting adventure activities including stand up paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking, climbing, hill walking and gorge walking, which are all led by a highly qualified team of instructors.

Phill Sykes, Commercial Director for Aneurin Leisure, the charitable trust that manages Parc Bryn Bach said; “We at Aneurin Leisure are extremely proud to earn the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag at Parc Bryn Bach again this year. The award means a great deal to us as it not only recognises the quality of our excellent facilities, but also our commitment to delivering great quality green spaces for our visitors.”

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government. It is judged by green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including biodiversity, cleanliness, environmental management and community involvement.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said: “The Green Flag Award programme continues to go from strength to strength in Wales, thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of staff and volunteers across the country.

“We can’t underestimate how important high-quality parks and green spaces are to our communities, our health and wellbeing, nature and economy. We want to encourage everyone to explore their local area and make the most of the award-winning sites on their doorstep.”

Space-Chase-Banner

This summer children all over Blaenau Gwent are invited to join the Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge at their local library and take part in an out-of-this-world adventure, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first ever moon landing by the Apollo 11 crew.

The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged 4 – 11 years, encouraging them to borrow and read any six libraries books of their choosing during the school holidays. It’s completely FREE to join the challenge and everyone who signs up will get their very own Mission Folder, to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey.

Children will team up with futuristic family The Rockets for an exciting space mission as they track down books nabbed by a mischievous band of aliens. As children read library books for the Summer Reading Challenge, they will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells. By adding these stickers to their collectable mission folders, young readers will help the Rockets solve clues, dodge asteroids and discover the missing books, having lots of fun and adventures along the way.

Space Chase also has a website for children taking part in the Challenge where they can play games, enter competitions, and post book reviews. They can also use the brilliant Book Sorter to find great books recommended by other children – visit www.spacechase.org.uk to find out more.

Sue Wilkinson, CEO of The Reading Agency said: “At The Reading Agency, we tackle life’s big challenges through the proven power of reading. We know from our research that families and children love taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge, and we are proud to have been running the Challenge for twenty years this year. The space theme has been chosen to coincide with the 5Oth anniversary of the first moon landing. Last summer, children worked with illustrator Adam Stower to come up with ideas for the Space Chase adventure, and we hope the Challenge will inspire all children to use their local library and to read lots of great books throughout the summer and beyond."

The Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge will launch at our libraries in Blaenau Gwent from Saturday 13th July, ask at your local library for more information
