Life Changing Journeys with Aneurin Leisure: Hayley's Story
For International Women’s Day we’re sharing an inspiring story from one of our life members at Abertillery Sports Centre.
In August 2011 Hayley took a life changing decision to join Slimming World, at the time she weighed 23 stone and was a size 30-32. Here’s her story in her own words: -
“I was fed up of being a burden and scared that my children and husband would end up living a life without me. As soon as I joined the slimming group I followed the food plan and started to lose the weight immediately.
By January 2013 I was down to 15 stone, but my weight loss had started to slow down, so I decided to sign up for a life membership at Abertillery Sports Centre. I wasn’t quite confident enough to go straight into gym work, so I started swimming most days and was covering up to 50 lengths each time. Along with swimming I also started power walking with my husband and by February 2013 I had shed another stone. I decided I wanted to run a 5k race for life, so in June 2013 I completed my first 5k and decided I was in love with fitness and was determined to get fitter and stronger.
In September 2013 I was down to 13 stone and feeling confident enough to start fitness classes like Fit Step, Aqua Aerobics and Spin. I started spending more and more time at the Sport Centre and got lots of support from the other life members.
In January 2014 my mum was taken seriously ill and was on a life support machine in intensive care; so me and my sister decided to run the Swansea Bay 10k to raise money for the hospital. By this time I was at my target weight of 11 stone and was happy. After running the 10K, I discovered a love of running and decided that I wanted to complete a half marathon and pushed myself to train for the Cardiff Half Marathon.
In October 2015 I felt the benefits of the weeks of training; not only running but by completing classes at Abertillery Sports Centre such as Spin, Plyometric Strength and Kettlebells, I was feeling stronger and could finally run my first half marathon. Since then I have run another six half marathons and numerous 10k runs.
Running and training in the gym go hand in hand to keep you fit and healthy, along with a healthy balanced diet. I now train at the centre five days a week, enjoying both the Virtual and Live Les Mills group exercise classes and Boot Camp.”
Hayley’s passion for fitness has also led to her developing a social running group for her local community called ‘Edd’s Eagles’ which meet every Wednesday at 6pm at Abertillery Sports Centre. For more information on Edd’s Eagles call Hayley Edwards on 07449 626753 or Daniel Thorne on 07506 905507.
