Healthy Body - Healthy Mind: How Exercise Can help with Revision
For many students of all ages, the weeks and months leading up to exams can be a challenging and stressful time, but recent studies have shown that regular exercise can also boost mental performance as well as improving physical health, making it a vital element in helping students with revision and exam preparation.
With this in mind, we have reduced the cost of our Student life membership to just £17.50 per month, and introduced a fantastic Easter holidays offer of £9.99, which you can sign up to from the 5th April, ready for the start of the holidays on 8th April – that’s 2 weeks membership for just £9.99!
The benefits of regular exercise are well known, not only does it improve your general health and wellbeing it can also reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. But less well known are the benefits to our mental health and brain function that regular exercise can affect.
Exercise increases the production of a whole host of natural hormones that improve your mental wellbeing and help with revision including; serotonin, which helps to regulate your sleep cycles and boost your mood; dopamine, which positively influences learning by increasing your attention span and norepinephrine, which can improve your motivation and mental stimulation.
Regular aerobic exercise has also been found to directly stimulate the hippocampus, the part of the brain that deals with learning and memory systems, which means that taking a break from your studies to exercise could have memory boosting effects.
In addition to aiding brain function and cognition, exercise is also a great way to combat the stress and anxiety caused by upcoming exams. Virtually any type of exercise from aerobics to yoga can act as a stress reliever as physical activity increases the production endorphins, the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters. This in turn can boost self-confidence, reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress and improve your quality of sleep.
