We are thrilled to be hosting one of four creative and community events which are taking place across the Eastern Valleys to encourage people to turn off the lights for Earth Hour to show their concern for the planet.

Head4Arts is spearheading activities on Saturday 30th March in Parc Bryn Bach Park in Tredegar, Blaenavon World Heritage Centre, Cyfarthfa Park and Castle in Merthyr Tydfil, and Parc Penallta in Ystrad Mynach.

Participants will be encouraged to pledge one thing they can change to slow down climate change. The pledges will be written on an origami crane and then strung together and become the central focus of a lantern parade at Parc Penallta.

“In Japan, the crane is a mystical creature and is believed to live for a thousand years,” said Head4Arts Manager Kate Strudwick. “Traditionally, it was believed that if one folded 1,000 origami cranes, one’s wish would come true. It has become a symbol of hope and healing during challenging times.”

With support from WWF, Head4Arts has set up lots of activities in Tredegar, Blaenavon, and Merthyr Tydfil during the day, leading up to the event in Ystrad Mynach:

  • In Parc Bryn Bach they will be making mini-gardens for bees to pollinate and floating them off across the lake.
  • At the World Heritage Centre in Blaenavon there will be lots of eco-friendly food and storytelling.
  • In Cyfarthfa Park, children will be shown how to make healthy food to feed to the ducks and can follow a penguin trail.

At the end of the day, people will bring their lanterns to Parc Penallta for a big lantern parade with live music and willow sculptures. Everyone will then take their lanterns home to use from 8.30pm – 9.30pm – the time when lights are switched off across the globe.
