Gwent Archives collects and preserves unique historical archives and makes them available for you to use.
Using them you can discover an amazing amount about the history of Gwent and its people.
Gwent Archives is the official archive for the five local authorities in the Gwent area. We are also recognised by the National Archives as a place of deposit for public records and by the Church in Wales for parochial records.
It is free to visit Gwent Archives to carry out research in person. We also have experienced staff who can help point you in the right direction. Lectures, workshops and sessions for new users are regularly held and group visits can be arranged. A paid search service is available for those who are unable to visit. We also have a conservation department and can help advise you on how to care for your own archives.
Preparing for your visit
Please bring ID, which includes your address and signature, on your first visit. Our documents are irreplaceable so please bring a pencil for note taking. We also permit the use of laptops and wi-fi is available. A permit can be purchased for taking photographs. We will try to accommodate anyone who visits but we recommend contacting us prior to your visit so we can reserve you a place.
We are always pleased to accept new records of all kinds and all dates, either as deposits or donations. If you have or know someone who has something which you think should be in the Archive please contact us. Gwent Archives often has placements available for volunteers. These can either be based in the office or using IT to work from home. If you are interested in helping us please get in touch.
