Abertillery & District Museum

The Abertillery and District Museum has a wide ranging collection from prehistoric era to present day. Recent refurbishment sends you on a journey through time with a chronological arrangement of exhibits In addition they have specialist exhibits on coal and iron industries. Visitors can see an Iron Age axe head, a pistol possibly used by Chartists and Arthur Scargill’s baseball cap! Top it all off with some refreshments in a real working Italian café – one of their finest exhibits.

Blaina Chartist Visitor Centre

Learn about the chartist movement, their fight for voting reform & social justice and its connection with Nantyglo & Blaina. Salem chapel’s information centre houses a permanent exhibition of the chartist movement. Located within the upper reaches of the Gwent Valleys in South Wales, Nantyglo and Blaina has an exciting history of Scotch Cattle activity, riots and the Chartist Uprising. Visitors can view the story of the Chartist Movement and events leading up to the March on 4th November 1839 and find out about the characters involved, John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones, what motivated them and their legacy.

Blaina Heritage Action Group Museum

The museum includes displays on the local coal and iron industries, chapels, schools, local societies, sport and local celebrities and a fully furnished reconstruction of a Victorian Welsh kitchen. The group also have a large collection of documents available to peruse.

Brynmawr Museum

The museum has a varied collection of everyday artefacts, including a collection of Brynmawr furniture, manufactured by one of the small industries set up by the Quakers in the Brynmawr Experiment. There are a lot of items in the museum from Brynmawr’s Past. Exhibits include: School Photographs, Medical Equipment, Church & Chapel China, Police Uniforms, Scout & Guide Uniforms, Sporting Cups & Equipment, Civic Shields, WWI & WWII photographs, children’s toys, church artifacts and many other items. It’s also good to visit on Thursday mornings, for the coffee morning, which allows visitors and members to get together and have a chat, about the past, present and future.

Guardian - the Six Bells Mining Memorial

Guardian is Sebastien Boysen’s 20m sculpture commemorating the mining disaster that cost the lives of 45 men and boys from the small village of Six Bells. The memorial is set in Parc Arrael Griffin, the reclaimed site of Six Bells Colloery. The popular Ebbw Fach Trail passes through the parkland. Ty Ebbw Fach visitor centre contains an interactive interpretation room telling the history of the village, the disaster and the sculpture. It also has a fine bbistro serving hot and cold drinks, hot meals and delicous home made cakes.

Gwent Archives

Gwent Archives opened at its new site in Ebbw Vale in 2011. The magnificent new facilities provide an ideal environment for you to use the unique collection of documents. It boasts 10km of state of the art storage so the Collection can be preserved for future generations leaving plenty of room to go on collecting - they are always keen to hear from people with documents they think might be of interest.

It also has lecture and group facilities so people can learn more about using the resources. The design of the modern archive conservation studio allows visitors to see the delicate work of repair and conservation as it is carried out.

The General Offices

Trace your family history, relive memories of steel working and experience Wales’ only 4D cinema all in the former steelworks office. The GO as it is fondl know hosts the Ebbw Vale Works Museum that is a unique collection of artefacts and document telling the story of iron and steel making in Ebbw Vale. Gwent Archive are also located here.

Tredegar History Museum

Overlooked by Tredegar Town Clock, the museum has a varied collection of artefacts reflecting the industry and life of this important iron making town. Tredegar is also the home of The Medical Aid Society that local politician and Welsh hero, Aneurin Bevan, based the UK’s National Health Service on. the museum is developing a new exhibition to showcase this.
