Physical activity and sport have numerous benefits in all aspects of our well-being. It aids positive reinforcement in both physical and mental health and provides a social environment to develop crucial life skills. There are many barriers to accessing sport and physical activity, one being a simple lack of access to appropriate clothing and footwear. Having the correct kit to participate in sport gives people of all ages the confidence to develop themselves and their opportunities, thus improving other qualities such as teamwork, communication, leadership, and resilience.

Aneurin Leisure Trust's sports development team is working in partnership with Street Games Wales in establishing the Community Kit Room (CKR), through the Family Engagement Project (FEP). The CKR looks to work in collaboration with partners such as schools, sports clubs, organisations and community groups to help those of all ages and abilities access appropriate clothing and footwear, to support their journey in health, sport and fitness.

The CKR will be situated in Abertillery Sports Centre where members of the public can enquire about available kit, with the potential of walk-ins to view and select items. The CKR will work with partners to represent themselves as 'HUBS', where they will become donation and collection points within our local communities of Blaenau Gwent. Thus, those who are unable to visit Abertillery Sports Centre will still be able to donate or receive sports clothing or footwear of their choice. All kit and footwear will have a cleanliness guarantee.

We are currently inviting local organisations and sports clubs to join this project to create a sustainable supportive network in the area of health, sport and fitness within Blaenau Gwent.
