Library Services Achieve National High Standards Again

We are very proud to announce that our libraries in Blaenau Gwent continue to achieve the 12 core entitlements set out by the Welsh Public Library Standards.

The latest report from the Welsh Public Library Standards confirms the service’s exemplary performance, with both the number of active borrowers increasing by 7% and the number of books issued also increasing; adult book issues increased by 108% while children’s book issues increased by 309%.

Aneurin Leisure Trust is commissioned by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council to run the Library Service across Blaenau Gwent, with 98% of all residents living within 2.5 miles of our six libraries in Abertillery, Ebbw Vale, Blaina, Brynmawr, Cwm and Tredegar plus the mobile service which supports the whole county.

Under the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964 it is a statutory duty for every library authority (local authorities) in Wales to provide a ‘comprehensive and efficient library service for all persons desiring to make use thereof’.

The Welsh Public Library Standards comprises of 12 core entitlements and a range of quality indicators.  This framework provides a mechanism to enable services to plan provision, set standards and demonstrate their value within local communities.  It also enables Welsh Government to assess performance of library services on a national level.

Tracy Jones, Library Services Manager Blaenau Gwent Libraries (Aneurin Leisure Trust) says: “The team has worked hard to ensure that everyone has a warm welcome at the libraries, and we are particularly delighted to see so many people of different ages coming through the libraries’ doors.  This reflects the many services we offer and the initiatives we have put in place such as the sports libraries, the new Welsh group and the many different activities that we run.

“We continue to look at new ways that we can support the community and have many ideas that we’re exploring to enhance our service.”

Councillor Sue Edmunds, the Council’s Cabinet Member for People & Education says: “Libraries in Blaenau Gwent have been revitalised and really are at the heart of our communities, offering much more than just books.  They are also home to the Council’s Community Hubs, bringing help and support with our services closer to the people who need it.

“The Cabinet welcomes this report and are appreciative of all the hard work going on to make libraries and their services attractive to people of all ages.”
