Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space.

The flags will be flying proudly at Parc Bryn Bach and Bedwellty Park in Tredegar this week in recognition of their excellent visitor facilities, high environmental standards, and commitment to delivering great quality green space.

Parc Bryn Bach and Bedwellty House and Park are two beautiful parks set in the heart of Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent. Parc Bryn Bach, a local nature reserve, boasts 340 acres of stunning grass and woodland including a 36-acre lake situated right at its heart. It’s the perfect venue to relax, have fun and learn something new with the exciting family and adventure activities on offer. Bedwellty House and Park provides a vibrant history of Tredegar, being synonymous with Aneurin Bevan and the beginnings of the NHS, with stunning parkland for visitors to enjoy (including a sensory garden) and the Orchid House Tea Room which provides a variety of refreshments, afternoon teas and Sunday lunches. It also has the pleasure of hosting many weddings and the grounds provide the perfect backdrop for these special days.

Catherine Hares, Manager of both parks said: "We're absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Green Flag Award for our parks, for the fifth year running. The team works incredibly hard to maintain the parks and to make sure that they're in the best condition possible for people to enjoy. This award represents their commitment and dedication to creating outstanding environments and improving community life."

224 parks and green spaces across the country have received the prestigious Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award – from country parks and formal gardens, to allotments, woodlands and churchyards.

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government. Independent green space experts volunteered their time in early autumn to judge applicant sites against eight strict criteria, including biodiversity, cleanliness, environmental management, and community involvement.

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said: “The pandemic has shown just how important high-quality parks and green spaces are to our communities. For many of us, they have been a haven on our doorstep, benefitting our health and well-being.

“The 224 flags flying this year are a testament to the hard work of staff and volunteers who have maintained excellent standards under the most challenging circumstances. I’d like to congratulate and thank them all for their outstanding commitment.”
