Bedwellty Park Tennis Courts Reopen After Renovation

  • Bedwellty Park officially reopened its tennis courts after renovations funded by the UK Government, Aneurin Leisure Trust and the LTA Tennis Foundation.

  • Bedwellty Park is being refurbished as part of the Parks Tennis Project, the biggest ever transformation of parks tennis facilities across Britain.

  • Courts in Bedwellty Park will provide opportunities for many more people to pick up a racket and get on court.

Bedwellty Park has officially reopened it’s tennis courts as part of a £57,300 renovation taking place in Blaenau Gwent funded by Aneurin Leisure Trust and the UK Government, supported by the LTA Tennis Foundation.

Tennis courts in Bedwellty Park, were recently reopened at an event attended by Ellie Griffin - Tredegar Deputy Mayor, Catherine Hares - Aneurin Leisure Trust Parks and Hospitality Manager, Kian Jenkins – Bedwellty House and Park Facility Manager, Hannah Winmill – Aneurin Leisure Sports Development Manager, Adam Hughes – Aneurin Leisure Community Engagement Officer along with representatives from the LTA. There was an opportunity for pupils from the local Tredegar Comprehensive School to pick up a racket and get on court for a tennis session.

Through the Parks Tennis Project, the LTA is delivering the biggest ever investment in parks tennis facilities across Britain, which has been used to transform 3 courts in Bedwellty Park providing a significant boost to sporting facilities.

The courts have undergone extensive work to ensure viability for years to come, including resurfacing, repainting, new nets and a new gate system. This nationwide programme of investment is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country, providing vital opportunities for children and adults to get active.

As well as weekly Barclays Free Park Tennis sessions, with equipment provided, the refurbished courts will host Local Tennis Leagues, giving people the opportunity to get involved in friendly and social local competitions.

All courts will be available to book via the LTA website. New booking systems and gate access technology means it is now easier to get on court by booking in advance to guarantee availability. Aneurin Leisure Trust have an Annual Household Family Pass £39.00 and Student Annual Pass £19.00 or Pay’n’Play £4.50 per court, per hour – small fees will ensure that the courts are maintained at their new high standard for years to come. The LTA and Aneurin Leisure Trust will work together to ensure Barclays Free Park tennis sessions are available on the courts providing regular opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and play.

Catherine Hares, Parks & Hospitality Manager at Aneurin Leisure Trust said:

"The refurbishment of the tennis courts is a welcomed development at Bedwellty Park, we are very grateful to the Lawn Tennis Association for supporting Bedwellty House & Park as part of their incredible programme to improving the tennis provision across the country and Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council for supporting the development.

“It is a top-quality facility for community members, groups and schools to participate in tennis regardless of ability or previous experience with affordable opportunities for all. There has been great uptake and usage of the tennis courts to date, the community is thrilled to have such a fabulous facility within the town."

Scott Lloyd, LTA Chief Executive, said:

“We’re delighted to see park tennis courts at Bedwellty Park officially re-open to the public, and in better shape than ever.

“Park tennis courts are vital for providing people with opportunities to pick up a racket, and we want as many people as possible, of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, to enjoy playing tennis and being active. Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come.”
